Mounds Walk
Debris avalanche mounds
980 m VolcanicPanorama
Strange grassy hummocks left by a colossal landslide off Ruapehu, with a three-volcano panorama.
About 9,500 years ago part of Ruapehu collapsed and sent a debris avalanche down the valley, leaving a field of hummocks up to 30 m high. A short climb onto one of them gives a wide view of Ruapehu, Ngāuruhoe and Tongariro, and Pukeonake scoria cone, in a single sweep.
