A still forest lake sacred to Ngāti Rangi, with Ruapehu reflected in its water.
A half-hour walk through podocarp forest in the Karioi Rāhui reserve to a quiet lake where Ruapehu often appears upside down in the water. Rotokura is tapu: no swimming, fishing, boating or eating at the lake. Rich in birdlife including kākā and whio.
