Waitonga Falls Track
Easy 4.0 kmreturn 1 hr 20 min return ↑ 316 m
Ruapehu’s southern ski area at 1,620 m, with the largest vertical drop in the country.
Ohakune Mountain Road ends at the Tūroa base, 17 km above town. Even without skiing it is a big-mountain place: the Mangaturuturu and Mangawhero valleys drop away below, the upper slopes reach 2,322 m, and the road itself passes waterfalls and ancient forest on the way up.
❄ Reliable snow at the base from late June to October. Road may close or require chains after snowfalls.
